The title of the episode is actually one of the literary masterpieces of Sylvia Plath whose tragic life practically needs no introduction. And tragic was just how the eighth episode of Mad Men’s fifth season turned out, at least for some.

Megan could pretty much identify herself with Lady Lazarus as she too was suffering from an inner battle that she’s been struggling with for some time. It basically concerned her career. Her presence at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce was nothing short of a blessing; she learned quickly and adapted well into the system. However, she couldn’t shrug off the truth that advertising was and never will be her forte. Megan was convinced that her fulfillment lies in the performing arts.
After a fairly thorough contemplation and introspection, Megan resolved to quit SCDP once and for all and pursue her passion for acting—a decision that may affect the company’s welfare on unpredictable levels and most especially Don.
Don wasn’t too happy about it but he wasn’t mad either. How he maintained his composure and rationality in such a situation was very admirable. Clearly, the man has matured in some aspects. After all, it’s likely that he would’ve responded differently if it were Betty, in which case he’d be so pissed off and would lash out on her. It’s safe to say Megan held a very special place in Don’s heart.
However, viewers can’t help but speculate if this laudable attitude was but temporary and would only surface on a case-to-case basis. Would Don exhibit the same maturity in future episodes? Or would they expect to find him engaging in more squabbles with Peggy? How they poorly handled the case of Mr. Belding and the Cool Whip wasn’t really promising, by the way. But then again, this may be something to look forward to in the upcoming episodes.
It’s not only the charming executive who deserved to be commended though as Peggy herself showed a surprising calmness amidst Mrs. Draper’s departure. At first, she was infuriated at Megan’s seeming ingratitude and insensibility to give up a position which many would kill for. But after awhile, Peggy saw that she is entitled to her own decision and that she has every right to pursue what she loved most.
Meanwhile, someone finds himself entering a whole new mess that doesn’t see a resolution before the end of the episode. And he’s no other than Pete who is unabashedly lovestruck by another woman.
While it was fairly easy to condone Don’s womanizing, seeing as how Betty was a terrible wife, Pete’s infidelity couldn’t be justified. His wife Trudy was nothing but a darling and so to cheat on her would just be taken as stupid and ruthless.
